In this post, we will learn about how to recognize if you or a family member is having a STROKE.
What is Stroke?
Stroke – called Paralysis (पैरालिसिस) or Lakwa (लकवा) – in common parlance.
It is the commonest cause of disability world-wide. The most common manifestation is paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty in speaking or swallowing and memory problems.
In India, 18 lakh people suffer from stroke each year.
Why is it important to learn about Stroke?
Early recognition of signs and symptoms of stroke is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Because you must take your family member to the hospital immediately after onset of symptoms.
For certain types of strokes, some special blood clot-dissolving medications can be given ONLY WITHIN 3 HOURS of symptom onset. If you miss this window, then the patient cannot receive the medication.
Research shows that patients who receive clinical care within 3 hours of symptoms have better outcomes. (https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/facts.htm)
How to recognize if someone is having Stroke?
Remember F.A.S.T.
F – Face drooping (चेहरे में टेढापन, चेहरे का एक तरफ झुकाव) A – Arm weakness (एक हाथ में कमजोरी या हाथ को ऊपर ना उठा पाना) S – Speech slurring (बोलने में अस्पष्टता या बोलने में साफ़ आवाज़ न निकल पाना) T- Time is extremely important – get to hospital immediately (अगर आप इन संकेतों में से कुछ भी महसूस करते हैं तो तुरंत हॉस्पिटल जाएँ)
